This course introduces students to the basic concepts of living organisms and their life processes. Students will learn that some kinds of organisms have completely disappeared, helping them understand the idea of extinction. The course also explains the identifiable stages in the life cycles of plants and animals, including growth, reproduction, and death. In addition, students will explore how organisms are able to grow and survive in many different habitats, gaining an appreciation of the diversity of life on Earth and the environments in which living things exist.

What will i learn?

• By the end of this course, students will be able to: Classify rocks based on properties that distinguish one type from another. Collect soil samples from different locations and compare their properties, including color, texture, reaction to water, and the presence of remains of living things. Compare and differentiate between rocks, sand, soil, and clay. Identify and record observable properties of the sun, moon, and stars. Identify and record the apparent changes in the shape of the moon over a period of two months. Observe and record changes in the position of the sun and moon in the sky over time. Investigate and describe how seeds change and grow into plants. Sequence the stages in the life cycle of a plant or an animal using pictures or diagrams. Explain that plants and animals have identifiable stages in their life cycles, including growth, reproduction, and death. Compare and describe the changes in the human life cycle, including birth, newborn, child, adolescent, adult, and elder stages. Provide examples showing that life cycles differ among species using observations and information from readings. Investigate a variety of familiar and unfamiliar habitats and describe how plants and animals survive and reproduce in them. Explain that organisms live in habitats that provide their basic needs: food, water, air, and shelter. Explain how plants and animals can cause changes in their environments, such as animals altering plants or enriching soil.
